While anti-psychotic medication may have a place in the short term to help treat some of the behavioural symptoms of dementia in some cases, Alzheimer Scotland continues to lobby for a reduction in their use.
This information sheet lists some of the more common drugs used together with their possible side effects; describes what the clinical guidance says about the use of anti-psychotics; and explains what action concerned family members and friends can take if they are worried about someone who may be receiving these drugs.
