The Dementia Dog team are looking to place the next Dementia Assistance Dog with a family in central Scotland. Dementia Dog is an innovative collaboration between Alzheimer Scotland and Dogs For Good which sees trained dogs matched with families where someone is at an early stage of their dementia journey and they live at home with their full time carer. Dementia Assistance Dogs are specially trained dogs; these dogs carry full public access rights and are trained to offer practical task support, act as a social connector in the community and are a constant loving companion. They also support to improve confidence, motivation, a sense of purpose and a bit of fun in their family’s life.
The basic eligibility requirements are:
- Families where one person living with dementia and is early on in their dementia journey (they may be awaiting an official diagnosis)
- Person living with dementia lives at home with their full-time carer (or other adult family member)
- Has a secure fenced garden
The team are holding in-person information sessions in various Alzheimer Scotland DRCs and have already hosted one online which can be viewed here.
