Alzheimer Scotland’s Commission on the Future of Long Term Care in Scotland report was published on 27 May 2024. The Commission, led by former First Minister of Scotland and Alzheimer Scotland Ambassador Henry McLeish, has identified a clear lack of strategic planning and commissioning for long term care arrangements in Scotland and no clear national or local plans as to how we best address the current and future long term care needs of people with dementia, and more specifically, people with advanced dementia.
We believe the findings and recommendations of the Commission are so significant and far reaching that they need addressed as a central Scottish Government priority.
The report sets out 16 key recommendations which we believe will help Scotland better understand the existing landscape and deliver a comprehensive and ethical commissioning strategy for long term care. It explores a range of alternative models and approaches that should be considered in the Scottish context. Importantly, the report also challenges the Scottish Government to re-think how we fund and pay for care, now and in the future. These recommendations act as a roadmap to transforming long term care that reflects the type of care we all need and want. We urge the Scottish Government to implement all of the recommendations in this report as a matter of urgency, and deliver fairness, equality and the best possible long term care to one of our most vulnerable communities in Scotland.
